  • Sample the local food and wines during our journey together before we transfer to Sicily. From Palermo we visit Erice, Trapani and the famous Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, Ragusa and old Modica, the seaside town of Syracuse and Taormina with its amazing views of the Mediterranean and Mt Etna. The tour concludes back in Palermo.

    This is a fabulous tour that brings together all the very best of Sicily and Southern Italy in the one itinerary.Our tours focus on visiting the special places, not just those on the standard tourist route. Part of the fun of touring is meeting new people and our small groups give you the best opportunity to get to know your travelling companions in a relaxed and friendly environment.

    Day 1 Sunday: NaplesArrive Naples and transfer to our hotel. This evening meet your fellow travellers for a short pre-tour briefing. Overnight: Galleria Umberto Hotel (or similar).

    Day 2 Monday: Naples – Pompeii – Paestum

    With our local guide we visit the Old City of Naples and see the Cappella Sansevero. This afternoon we visit Pompeii, the Roman city destroyed by the awesome power of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. On a guided walking tour with a local expert, we are given an insight into everyday Roman life and see fascinating sights including the Forum and Amphitheatre. We then make our way to our charmingly rustic accommodation near Paestum. Tonight we will enjoy a traditional meal together.

    Day 3 Tuesday: Paestum – Scala

    This morning we learn the art of traditional Campania cooking before sitting down to enjoy the lunch that we have prepared. This afternoon we will explore UNESCO listed Paestum, a secret gem hidden away from the main tourist track and just waiting to be discovered. Looking at the gleaming white marble temples against the backdrop of the mountains is a wonderful and unique experience. Our local guide brings this important historical site to life before we continue to Scala and our base for the next 4 nights. Overnight: Hotel Villa Giuseppina (or similar). B, L

    Day 4 Wednesday: Scala – Ravello – Amalfi – Positano –Scala

    The 13 villages of the Amalfi Coast are collectively known as pearls – each has its own character, history and culture. Our first stop is Ravello, a gorgeous little town with spectacular views and fabulous villas. Next we tour Amalfi with its tightly packed hillside houses, dominated by beautiful of St Andrews Cathedral. Then to the fishing village of Positano. Overnight: Hotel Villa Giuseppina (or similar).     Day 5. Thursday: Scala – Capri – Scala

    Today we sail to the island of Capri, off the Sorrento Peninsula. A popular resort since the days of Ancient Rome. Capri town offers a choice of shopping, cafes and restaurants. Travel the funicular railway through the lemon groves. Return to Scala. Overnight: Hotel Villa Giuseppina (or similar). B

    Day 6 Friday: Scala – Vietri sul Mare – Tramonti – Scala

    Today we visit more of the Amalfi Coast pearls including Minori, Maiori and Cetara before reaching Vietri sul Mare, famous for its handpainted and vividly-coloured ceramics. Then to Tramonti, where we visit a local producer of limoncello liqueur before we return to Scala for our farewell dinner.

    Day 7 Saturday: Scala – Royal Palace of Caserta – Sant’Agata dei Goti – Naples

    Today we drive to the exquisite baroque 18th century Royal Palace of Caserta. We then travel to Sant’Agata dei Goti and a local restaurant for a tasting of Aglianico wines and lunch. B, L

    Day 8 Sunday: Palermo

    Transfer Naples to Palermo and transfer to our hotel. Balance of the day is free.

    Overnight: Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa (or similar). B

    Day 9 Monday: Palermo – Erice – Trapani – Valley of the Temples

    Today we leave the capital of Sicily behind and make our way to the beautifully preserved medieval village of Erice, one of the pearls of Italy -dating back to Etruscan times. Then on to the Trapani and Paceco nature reserves, where the lagoons were used in the production of salt. Later we travel to a winery in Marsala, to sample their distinctive wine. Our accommodation is near Agrigento.

    Day 10 Tuesday: Valley of the Temples – Ragusa Ibla

    Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is one of the greatest legacies of ancient Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide brings the past to life as we explore this amazing historical site, with structures from 510 BC. We then visit the town of Piazza Armerina, and Villa Romana del Casale -one of the largest Roman dwellings with it's beautiful mosaics. From here it's back to our accommodation in Ibla. Overnight: Antico Convento (or similar). B

    Day 11 Wednesday: Ragusa Ibla - Modica – Ragusa Ibla

    We visit the old town of Modica and then Scicli to visit the Palazzo del Municipio and Palazzo Lacomna, before returning to Ragusa. Overnight: Grande Albergo Alfeo (or similar). B

    Day 12 Thursday: Ragusa Ibla - Syracuse – Taormina

    This morning we travel to Syracuse, an ancient town by the sea that once rivalled Athens as the most important city of the Greek world. Explore the town’s archaeological area with our local guide. Highlights include Arethusa’s Spring, the Piazza del Duomo and the 6th century BC Temple of Apollo. Later we travel north to Taormina, a delightful town built high on the cliffs, offering views over the Mediterranean. Overnight: Hotel Monte Tauro (or similar). B

    Day 13 Friday: Taormina - Mount Etna - Taormina

    Our morning destination today is Mount Etna. Our drive will take us through several Sicilian towns and we will visit some old lava flows along the way. This afternoon we return to picturesque Taormina, the capital of Byzantine Sicily in the 9th century, see the splendid Greek Theatre, or perhaps the 13th century Cathedral of San Nicola. This evening we will come together for a farewell dinner.

    Day 14 Saturday: Taormina - Palermo

    Our tour of Sicily ends this morning after breakfast with a transfer for onward group flight. B
