  • The route Dhotrey to Rimbik was first traversed by the famous British botanist Dr Joseph Hooker. He identified a number of rhododendron trees and named some of them after his friends and one after himself. There were originally around 35 varieties of rhododendron is this area but with the passage of time there are now only about 9 varieties remaining.

    The smallest rhododendron is called Lepododom and is only about 6 inches tall. Cinerbarinum is a bush around three feet tall. Fisherite is a variety of rhododendron named after Dr Hooker’s friend Dr Fisher. Hookerite is a varieties named after Dr Hooker himself. Then there are the large Arberium trees. There are others which are purple in colour and yellow in colour. We are there for the best season for visiting this area - to view the rhododendrons.

  • Rhododendrons of Sikkim and Darjeeling

    Day 01 Arrive Delhi

    Upon arrival in Delhi, meet and assist and then transfer to your hotel. Rest of the day free for some rest. O/N in hotel.

    Day 02 Fly Delhi – Bagdogra – drive to Darjeeling

    After breakfast, transfer to airport to board flight for Bagdogra. Upon arrival, meet and assist and then drive to Darjeeling. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel. Rest of the day free to stroll along the mall area. O/N in hotel.

    Day 03 Darjeeling

    After breakfast, proceed for full day tour of Darjeeling. Today you will visit visiting Bontanical Garden, Happy Valley Tea Estate, Zoological Park, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute along with train excursion.

    Day 04 Darjeeling

    Morning visit to Tiger Hill and Ghoom Monastery. Return to hotel then proceed for return train ride to Ghoom. Then to Takdah Orchid Farm. O/N in hotel. 

    Day 05 Darjeeling – Dhotrey Village – Trek to Tumling

    Morning transfer from Darjeeling to Dhotrey Village (starting point of the trek). It is about 70 kms in distance and will take about 2 to 3 hrs drive. Then we start the trek from Dhotrey (2134 m) to Tumling (2900 m). Dhotrey is a small village, inhabited by Buddhist, Sherpas. From here one can get a view of the trekking route. It is about 11 kms in distance and will take about 5 to 6 hrs including lunch on the way. We climb uphill passing through view point of Tonglu and all along the way are clumps of Rhododendron trees. O/N tents/trekkers huts.

    Day 06 Tumling to Darjeeling

    After breakfast, one can see the clumps of Rhododendron around Tounglu and later walk downhill to Chitrey then drive to Darjeeling. O/N in hotel.

    Day 07 Darjeeling – Hilley Transfer from Darjeeling to Hilley in West Sikkim. This drive takes about 5 to 6 hrs and we will have to walk 5 kms to Versey Rhododendron Sanctuary. Overnight hut / tent.

    Day 08 Hilley

    Full day walk around the Versey Rhododendron Sanctuary. Sandwiched between the Singalila National Park in the south and Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve in the north, this small 104-sq-km sanctuary is at an altitude of 10,000 ft and supports a wide variety of bio-diversity. But the main attractions of the sanctuary are the rhododendrons which bloom in April-May colouring the Sanctuary in wild abandon. Overnight hut / tent.

    Day 09 Hilley – Namchi

    After breakfast transfer to Namchi via Kitam Bird Sanctuary home to more than 200 species of birds and butterflies. The beautiful village of Sumbuk and its gladiolas fields, ancient temples and the emerald green Rangit River make Kitam one of the most beautiful and untouched wilderness in lower Sikkim. Characterized by warm summers and pleasant winters, Kitam Bird Sanctuary bursts with wildlife like Rufous-necked Hornbill, Grey-crowned Prinia, Rufous-throated Wren-babbler, Yellow-vented Warbler, Wedge-billed Wren-babbler and many more. Later transfer to Namchi . O/N Seven Hill Resort

    Day 10 Namchi - Gangtok

    Transfer from Namchi to Gangtok via Sandruptshe , Bon Monastery and Buddha Park. It is about 6/7 hrs including the visits. O/N Hotel

    Day 11 Gangtok – Kalimpong

    After breakfast transfer from Gangtok to Kalimpong via Rumtek Monastery and the Institute of Tibetology. It is about 90 kms and will take about 5 hrs. Evening Free.

    Day 12 Kalimpong

    Visit different flower nurseries in and around Kalimpong and one can also visit the Local Haat Bazar ( Local Market ). O/N Hotel

    Day 13 Kalimpong – Bagdogra airport – Fly Delhi

    After breakfast, transfer to Bagdogra airport to board your flight for Delhi. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. O/N in hotel.

    Day 14 Delhi – Agra (210 kms/05 hrs)

    After breakfast drive to Agra. Upon arrival, check into hotel then visit Agra Fort. O/N in hotel.

    Day 15 Agra – Jaipur

    Early morning visit Taj Mahal (Friday Closed) and then drive to Jaipur enroute visit Fatepur Sikri. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel. O/N in hotel.

    Day 16 Jaipur

    After breakfast, proceed for sightseeing tour of the city. Today you will visit Amber Fort, Wind Palace, Observatory and city palace. O/N in hotel.

    Day 17 Jaipur – Delhi (240 kms/06 hrs)

    After breakfast, drive to Delhi. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel. O/N in Hotel.

    Day 18 Depart Delhi

    Departure transfer to airport to board flight for onward journey.
