Our Traditional England takes in some of the finest cities and natural sites that England has to offer. Visit the quaint city of York with its winding cobbled streets and famous Cathedral, enjoy lunch in a traditional English pub and spend time in the world-famous Yorkshire Dales National Park which features a selection of the county’s most iconic sights and famous towns.
DAY 1:York Minster, Shambles, Jorvik Viking Centre, river cruise
We depart London for York, one of the most beautiful cities in England and county city of Yorkshire. On arrival, there is a walking tour of the city centre including a visit to both The Shambles, a narrow medieval street lined with shops, boutiques and tea rooms; and York Minster, the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. York has a fine collection of attractions including Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, Jorvik Viking Centre, the York Art Gallery, Richard III Museum and the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall as well as the National Railway Museum. Our welcome dinner this evening is taken on a river cruise before we return to our hotel.
DAY 2:Castle Howard, North Yorkshire Moors RailwayWe begin our day with a visit to Castle Howard, one of England’s greatest stately homes, admired for the exuberance of its architecture, the wealth of its interiors and the beauty of its grounds. Entrance to the house is included, with time also to explore the landscaped gardens and visit the local speciality shops in the house courtyard. Later this afternoon we enjoy a romantic ride through the heart of the National Park on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Relax in wood panelled apartments and enjoy dramatic scenery and nostalgic memories of times gone by.
DAY 3:Knaresborough, Harrogate, Yorkshire
Our tour today starts at the popular market town of Knaresborough where we pause to view the dramatic river gorge and castle ruins. Later this afternoon we visit the romantic town of Harrogate, formerly Yorkshire’s premier spa resort and favourite resting place of the nobility, and now an internationally renowned floral centre. On arrival we enjoy an orientation tour of the main sights including the former Pump Room and Royal Baths, the Royal Hall, Valley Gardens and The Stray. Enjoy time at leisure to further explore the town and maybe even a visit to the world famous Betty’s Cafe and Tea Rooms – a splendid Yorkshire tradition - before returning to our hotel for the night.
DAY 4:Midlands, Peak District,Bakewell, Chatsworth We depart from York to the English Midlands via a tour of the Peak District National Park. Our tour takes us to a traditional English pub near Bakewell where lunch is provided, then on to Chatsworth House, the magnificent home of the Duke of Devonshire. Afterwards we head onward to our hotel at Royal Leamington Spa.
DAY 5:Stratford upon Avon, Anne Hathaways cottage, Coventry, Warwick Castle
In the morning we visit Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace, and spend some time at Anne Hathaway’s cottage. If you wish you can stay all day in Stratford, but in the afternoon there is a chance to visit Coventry, home of Lady Godiva, and to see both the old and new cathedrals. Continue on from here to Warwick to visit its magnificent castle. There is an option this evening to enjoy dinner at a medieval banquet at Warwick Castle.
DAY 6:Cotswolds, Oxford, Blenheim Palace Today we tour through the Cotswolds, an area of stunning landscapes and quaint villages, before travelling on to Oxford where a walking tour of this city of dreaming spires is provided on our arrival. Oxford is England’s oldest university with its 39 colleges. The university is the oldest in the English speaking world dating back to the 11th century. In the afternoon we visit Blenheim Palace, thought by many to be the finest stately home in England. Sir Winston Churchill is buried at St Martin’s Church, Bladon, adjacent to the palace. In the evening there is a farewell dinner at our hotel in Royal Leamington Spa.
DAY 7:Leamington Spa, London Today we have a leisurely morning to explore the town of Leamington Spa, or relax in our hotel, before transferring to Leamington Spa train station. We join the train for our short journey back to London where our journey ends.
