DAY 1: Welcome to Great Barrier Island
We fly into Claris where we are met by Steve our driver-guide and head off to explore the central part of the island. We visit the famous ‘Milk, Honey & Grain Museum’ and the Community Arts Village and have an included welcome lunch at ‘My Fat Puku’ in Claris. Time for a stroll along Medlands Beach before checking in to our accommodation. Great Barrier Lodge sits on park like grounds beside beautiful Whangaparapara Harbour. Later join your fellow travellers for our included Welcome Dinner. L
DAY 2: Man O War, Port Fitzroy, Cruise and tour
After breakfast we board ‘Sundancer’ for our fantastic coastal cruise. Check out the old Kauri Sawmill and Whaling Station sites before heading up the coast through the spectacular Broken Isles. Once through the Man O’ War Passage we enjoy lunch in the sheltered waters of beautiful Port FitzRoy Harbour. Then we visit Glenfern Sanctuary for an informative presentation. Next to Sunset Rock for panoramic views of Port Fitzroy Harbour and beyond. Then back down the east coast by bus enjoying great views of Rakitu Island, Windy Canyon and Pacific Ocean Panoramas. We stop enroute for a comfort break at Awana beach. B,L
DAY 3: Tryphena, Shoal Bay
Today we head off to discover Tryphena. We visit the Shoal Bay Pottery before heading back to Angsana Restaurant where we can explore the lovely grounds, local wildlife and a small gift shop before lunch... If you fancy a swim pack your togs and towels because after lunch we head up to the Kaitoke Hot Springs. The walk to these natural and undeveloped springs is on a mainly level and sheltered gravelled track. The first 10-minutes of the trail meanders through a stunning ‘Gt Barrier Island Nikau Palm’ grove. B,L
DAY 4: Okupu, Blind Bay, Pigeon Post
Steve picks us up this morning and we set off to explore the Okupu Harbour area. We visit Okupu Beach to check out the ancient Pohutukawa trees and then tour around to the ‘forgotten wharf’ at Blind Bay. We enjoy our lodge supplied picnic lunch (own cost) on the shores of a privately-owned beach before making our way back to ‘civilization’. For the adventurous, we enjoy a ‘wind in the hair’ joy ride on ‘Crazyhorse’… Steve’s Harley style 3 wheeled motorbike. We visit the Pigeon Post for gifts/souvenirs and tea/coffee etc before checking in for our flights home. B
