Join us on this Hungary, Germany, Austria, Danube and Italy tour in 2021. You will experience a fantastic Danube River Cruise followed by visits to Verona, Assisi, Rome, Cassino, St Giovanni Rotondo, St Padre Pio, Monte St Angelo & Bari. Plus you have the option of a five-day extension to Dubrovnik, Medjugorje, and Mostar.
14 DAY ITINERARY
Tour commences in Munich Monday 10 May 2021 and concludes at Bari, Italy on 23 May.
N.B: Group members should arrive in Munich the night prior to the tour commencement, due to early start on day one of the tour.
There is a five-day optional extension (post the base tour) to Dubrovnik, Medjugorje and Mostar. This optional extension commences from Bari on 23 May 2021 and concludes in Dubrovnik Friday 27 May.
DAY 1 MON: MUNICH, PASSAU – GERMANY
This morning we have an orientation tour of Munich The city sprawls in all directions outward from the Innenstadt - the city’s historic and medieval core, or Altstadt, is now a pedestrian-only district. At its heart is the famous Marienplat z square. North of here is the Residenz (former royal palace) a sprawling complex fronting two major squares, Max-Joseph-Platz and Odeonsplatz. This afternoon we depart Munich for Passau, a German city on the Austrian border at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. Known as the Three Rivers City, it's overlooked by a 13th-century hilltop fortress housing a city museum and observation tower. The old town is known for its baroque architecture, including St. Stephen's Cathedral with distinctive onion-domed towers. We embark approximately 4pm for our Danube River cruise. Time to mingle with the other group members and explore the vessel before we enjoy our included welcome dinner on board.B,D
DAY 2 TUE: KREMS - AUSTRIA
Today we have an included tour of Krems followed by a visit to the Benedictine Gottweig Abbey The historic riverside city of Krems has a rich history of wine production, charming old architecture and quaint streets and shops.B,L,D
DAY 3 WED: ESZTERGOM, BUDAPEST - HUNGARY
This morning we have an included excursion to the imposing basilica of Esztergom, the largest church in Hungary. We then continue to Budapest to experience this beautiful riverside city by night.Tonight enjoy our included show of traditional Hungarian folk dance and music.B,L,D
DAY 4 THUR: BUDAPEST - HUNGARY
Budapest is bisected by the River Danube combining the hilly Buda district with flat Pest. Check out the funicular up Castle Hill to the Old Town dating from Roman times, Trinity Square, 13th-C Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion offering sweeping city views. We have another day to enjoy this jewel of the Danube, or visit Puszta and see traditional horse riding.B,L,D
DAY 5 FRI: BRATISLAVA - SLOVAKIA
Next stop is Bratislava - surrounded by vineyards and the Little Carpathian mountains. Our included afternoon city tour includes Bratislava Castle overlooking the old town. This evening we enjoy the magnificent city lights.B,L,D
DAY 6 SAT: VIENNA - AUSTRIA
We have an included city tour of beautiful Vienna including State Opera, Burgtheater, Hofburg, Parliament, Town hall and Votive Church.B,L,D
DAY 7 SUN: LINZ -YBBS - AUSTRIA
Today we explore another Danube River town situated between Salzberg and Vienna. Check out the old city centre or optional excursions available on board. Ybbs an der Donau was established in 1317 and is at the intersection of the important trade routes and had great economic importance during the Middle Ages. N.B: The itinerary for today is dependent upon river levels.B,L,D
DAY 8 MON: PASSAU, VERONA - ITALY
We depart for Italy this morning for Verona – famous for its fabulous architecture and Juliet’s Balcony. Overnight Verona.B
DAY 9 TUES: ASSISI
Assisi – famous as the home of St’s Francis and Clare. Our tour includes the magnificent Basilica of St Mary of the Angels, the Portiuncula Chapel restored and used by St Francis, (and also the place where St Clare received her religious habit beginning the Order of the Poor Clares), the Rose Garden and the Basilca of St Francis. B
DAY 10 WED: ROME - THE ETERNAL CITY
Following breakfast this morning depart for Rome where we have a visit to the magnificent Vatican Museums and St Peters - the heart of Catholicism where spiritual and artistic excellence includes masterpieces of renowned artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini and Raphael.B
DAY 11 THUR: ROME
Morning Mass then free time toexplore the famous and beautiful Trevi fountain, Piazza Novana and Spanish Steps.B
DAY 12 FRI: CASSINO, ST GIOVANNI ROTONDO
Depart Rome this morning and head south to Cassino, the scene of New Zealand and the other Allies WW2 attack on the German held Abbey at Monte Cassino. We visit the famous Benedictine Abbey and the Commonwealth War Cemetery, with its graves of NZ and other Commonwealth fallen. From here we continue on to St Giovanni Rotondo, the home of St Padre Pio.B
DAY 13 SAT: ST PADRE PIO, MONTE ST ANGELO
Following Mass this morning we continue our journey of discovery to the Gargano Peninsula and visit the Monte Sant'Angelo grotto which houses the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel where visitations were recorded in 490, 492 and 493. It has been the site of many famous pilgrimages, which started from Mont Saint-Michel . As well as many Popes from ancient times, Pope John Paul II visited the sanctuary in 1987. This evening we have an included farewell dinner to say goodbye to our friends in the group departing tomorrow. B,D
DAY 14 SUN: BARI
The base tour concludes after breakfast this morning with a transfer to Bari.
From here there are two recommended extensions available.B
OPTION 1: DUBROVNIK, MEDJUGORJE, MOSTAR Five day extension to Dubrovnik, Medjugorje and Mostar.
Medjugorje is in Bosnia/Herzegovina. It’s been an unofficial place of Catholic pilgrimage since the Virgin Mary appeared on Apparition Hill in 1981. There is a “Queen of Peace” statue marking the site of the 1st apparition and one in front of the St. James Church.
We also have an excursion to Mostar - long known as a river town linking East with West, with old Turkish style houses and the famous Old Bridge, Stari Most, after which the town named. In the 1990s conflict much of the historic town and the Old Bridge was damaged in the ethnic and religious conflicts. The magnificent Old Bridge has now been rebuilt.
This extension includes 1 night Dubrovnik, tour of the beautiful and UNESCO protected fortified city of Dubrovnik, 3 nights in the village of Medjugorje, with time to visit the sites and reflect.
Includes breakfast and dinner daily in Medjugorje.
N.B: This extension commences Bari and concludes in Dubrovnik.
Additional cost for this 5-day extension is $2,275 per person based on twin share.
