Inspiring Ireland (and the North)- LII
Number of Days: 7
Unspoilt coastlines, dramatic scenery and bustling, metropolitan cities – Ireland really has something for everyone! This tour will take in both the capital of the Republic of Ireland, the busy, multi-cultural port city of Dublin; as well as Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, known throughout the world as the birthplace of the Titanic. Throw in the stunning county Sligo and you will find yourself never wanting to leave Ireland!
DAY 1The journey departs from London’s Euston Station and we travel through England into Wales and through the top end of the Snowdonia National Park to Holyhead where we board the fast craft for Dublin’s port. On arrival in Dublin we are met and taken to our city centre hotel. In the evening there is a welcome drinks party and dinner at our hotel.
DAY 2After a morning exploring Dublin with a guide, we will transfer to Dublin’s Connolly railway station and board for Sligo where we arrive in the late afternoon before travelling onward to our hotel at Ballybofey. Dinner this evening is taken in our hotel in Ballybofey.
DAY 3Today we enjoy a tour of County Donegal, believed by many to be Ireland’s most beautiful county. We will travel to Killybeg and on to The Silver League Cliff in Glencolmkille. In the afternoon we will stop at Fanad Head Lighthouse before travelling on to Donegal town. This pretty town sits at the mouth of Donegal Bay and we will have some time to explore before travelling back to our hotel. Dinner is taken in our hotel.
DAY 4Today we will enjoy a leisurely tour to County Sligo. After a visit to Sligo Town we travel north to the country made famous by W.B. Yeats. We will visit Rosses Point, where Yeats spent his summers, and travel on to Drumcliffe, a town with history dating back to the monastery founded here in AD574. We will visit the beautiful church here, Yeats’ final resting place. Dinner is taken in our hotel in Ballybofey.
DAY 5We travel from Donegal across the border to Ulster and on to the city of Derry, the scene of so much trouble in the past. On arrival we take a walking tour of the city walls. After lunch at a local pub we board the train to Belfast. The rail journey takes us along the shore of Loch Foyle with some spectacular views. On arrival we transfer to our hotel in the city centre for dinner.
DAY 6In the morning there is a chance to explore Belfast with a guide. Belfast, set on a sea loch and ringed by imposing hills, is a major tourist destination steeped in history with world class shopping and leisure facilities. In the afternoon there is a ‘Highlights of Ulster’ tour which includes the Mountains of Mourne. In the evening there is a farewell dinner at a restaurant in the city centre of Belfast.
DAY 7Today we have the choice to fly back from Belfast to London, with frequent flights throughout the day, or return to London by rail and boat.
