  • Enjoy this fascinating journey around Sicily learning the secrets of this complicated layered society. Travelling in our own van in a small group, we will take our time to get a feel for the history and geography which have forged these people who are Sicilian first Italian second. We enjoy a diversity of food derived from the fusions of Greek Arab and European cuisines which reflect Sicily's interesting past.

    Day 1: Palermo
    Welcome to Sicilia We meet at our centrally located Hotel B&B Palermo and walk up the back streets for a welcome dinner included at our friendly local restaurant. Overnight Palermo b,D

    Day 2: Palermo
    We meet Domenico our charming guide for an in depth explore of the central city. We gain insights into the Palermo psyche and special hidden places sampling the famous street food along the way. In the afternoon we take a guided tour of the sumptuous Conte Federico Palace to see how the Spanish aristocracy once existed in Palermo. Overnight Palermo B

    Day 3: Palermo
    This morning we visit the Norman Palace and Chapel where all that glitters is gold. In the afternoon drive out to Monreale to be astounded at the great Cathedral which through mosaic conveys the stories from Biblical times. Overnight Palermo B

    Day 4: Enna
    Today we pick up our van and take the inland route through to Piazza Armerina and stop for lunch in Enna which is Sicily’s highest provincial capital. We arrive to Piazza Armerina to enjoy the Festival of Palio dei Normanni stepping back in time to the Norman control of Sicily. With pomp and pageantry the keys to the city are handed over to the Normans by the Saracens. Overnight Piazza Armerina B

    Day 5: Caltagirone, Syracuse
    We make an early start to beat the crowds and visit the UNESCO famed mosaic housed in the Roman Villa. We drive to Caltagirone to admire the wonderful modern tiling of their famous staircase and the fabulous pottery. We take our lunch and a mulberry granitas is a must. We then drive to the charming seaside town of Ortygia in Siracusa. Overnight Syracusa B

    Day 6: Syracuse, Ortygia
    Today is Ferragosto the holiday marking the Feast of Assumption. Early morning we visit the Archeological Park then explore the back streets of Ortygia visiting a museum or exhibition of your choice. Overnight Syracusa B

    Day 7: Noto, Ortygia
    Today we take a short drive to Noto to enjoy the whimsical baroque architecture built after the great earthquakes in the 17 century. We must try their famous ice cream as well then return to Ortygia for the night. Overnight Syracusa B

    Day 8: Castello Donnafugata, Agrigento
    We drive to Castello Donnafugata made famous by the Montalbano TV series. We enjoy a lunch stop here then continue to Agrigento and our gorgeous pension. Dinner included tonight. Overnight Agrigento B

    Day 9: Agrigento
    We start early to enjoy the Valley of Temples pretty much on our own. We visit the nearby museum housing remarkable finds from the area. Return to our lovely pension to relax then head out to the famous Turkish steps by the sea. Overnight Agrigento.B

    Day 10: Cefalu, St Ambroggio
    We head North to Cefalu considered one of the most beautiful towns in Sicily and the setting for the movie Cinema Paradiso. We explore the lanes and delight in the architecture stopping to visit the famous Cathedral. We continue to St Ambroggio our quaint little village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Overnight Cefalu B

    Day 11: Madonie Mountains
    We take a guided tour up into the Madonie Mountains to watch a fascinating falconry display visit a cheese factory and taste the manna cake. Lunch enroute at a mountain village. Overnight CefaluB

    Day 12: Taormina
    We drive along the coastline to an amazing Pottery warehouse then continue on to Savoca to visit the mummies arriving into beautiful Taormina late afternoon. Overnight Taormina B

    Day 13:Mt Etna
    Today we drive to Mount Etna where we take the gondola and Unimog up to 2900 metres. A truly magical experience with Etna in the background. Return to Taormina and enjoy a browse of the shops. Overnight Taormina B

    Day 14: Castelmola
    This morning we visit the Roman theatre with stunning views to Mt Etna then enjoy the Botanical gardens with time for another granita or the best cannoli. This afternoon we take bus up the windy hill to Castelmola to a quirky little bar serving almond wine. Dinner included tonight as we farewell Sicily. Overnight Taormina B,D

    Day 15: Messina, Matera
    An early start to catch the ferry across the straits of Messina to Italy. We drive to Matera and settle in. Dinner included tonight Welcome to Italy. Overnight Matera B,D

    Day 16: Matera
    We take a guided walk to explore Matera which has 3,000 inhabitable caves and churches. This afternoon we have free time to visit the museums and galleries or relax on the edge of the ravine (and try the local Primitivo wine). Overnight MateraB

    Day 17: Trulli Country
    After our gorgeous breakfast of local products we travel North to Ceglie in Trulli country. Settle in and relax before travelling into Ostuni one of the most beautiful white towns in the area. Overnight Ceglie B

    Day 18: Alberobello, Ceglie
    We enjoy a leisurely breakfast under the mulberry tree then drive to Alberobello the trulli house Mecca. Let's take a guided walk through this fascinating little place. Time to explore the shops before heading back to our own Trulli house to relax. Overnight Ceglie B

    Day 19: Castellana
    Another delicious breakfast then we head off to explore the Castellana Caves then return to relax and prepare for our included farewell dinner tonight. Overnight Ceglie.B,D

    Day 20: Ceglie, Bari
    We depart our beautiful Trulli house and drive to Bari this afternoon for onward travel arrangements.B
