  • The world famous Oberammergau Passion Play is performed in an open-air stage in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau and it is only held every ten years. Your next opportunity is in 2020.

Oberammergau is a beautiful village surrounded by majestic mountains and picturesque meadows and is known for detailed wood carving and Christmas decorations. You will be able to see village craftsmen producing beautiful wooden clocks, religious and general interest carvings. The town is also famous for its traditional painted homes and buildings.

What really made the town famous, is its performance of the Passion of Christ every decade. The play performance follows Christ from His triumphant entry into Jerusalem through His Trial, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension. It is a play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat. In 1633, Bavaria was being swept by a plague epidemic, and more than 80 lives had been lost in Oberammergau. The villagers vowed that if the village was further spared from the plague, they would perform the Passion Play every 10 years. The epidemic came to a standstill, and in 1634 the villagers fulfilled the promise for the first time. Ever since then they have loyally kept their vow.

The present format started in 2000 when a new production was introduced, however the structure of the play, with its living pictures from the Old Testament and acted scenes from the New Testament, has still been retained.

To be in the play, all actors and support people must be locals, with over 2,000 villagers involved as actors, singers, musicians or as technical support. There are 124 speaking roles, an orchestra, 48 person choir and hundreds of people involved in the back end including stagehands, seamstresses, firemen, attendants, etc. Men grow their hair and beards to look authentic for the period and costumes are hand-made. Although the area for the audience is covered the theater stage itself is open (with a retractable roof), and the background of the mountains makes it an unforgettable scene. People from all over the world are captivated by the Passion Play.

Although the text and music have been adapted, the traditional concept has remained intact. With inner conviction the local amateur actors, portray the life, sufferings and resurrection of Christ. We have previous experience of the, at times, very complex procedures for obtaining Oberammergau arrangements, having organized groups for previous Passion Plays.

This will be the third Oberammergau Passion Play we have taken groups to. The 2020 season will last from mid May till the end of September, with five performances of the play per week and interest is already strong. Accommodation in and around Oberammergau is very limited but is available in various categories, but demand for the few hotels will once again be extremely high – so we’ve already booked rooms for our clients. As in past years there will be a combination of accommodation in private lodges and in hotels. Additional travel post your Oberammergau tour can be arranged as required.
